The friction we didn’t see coming

By jon

I keep coming back to the idea that most teams don’t have a process problem so much as a permission problem. Not in a hierarchical sense — in the sense of who feels allowed to push back.

There are a few patterns that show up reliably. Not laws — patterns. The first is that the team that complains loudest about meetings is usually the team holding the meetings. The second is that the easiest meeting to cancel is the one nobody admits to needing.

If you’re considering a change like this, the part I’d warn you about is the middle. The first week is fun because everything is new. The last week is fine because you can see the end. The third week is when most of these efforts quietly die.
